Globally, natural gas is a growing segment of Chevron's energy portfolio.
Chevron Australia brings the substantial gas reserves from beneath the Earth’s surface to the people who use it.
Natural gas produced by Chevron Australia will be sold as liquefied natural gas (LNG), primarily under long-term contract to major utilities in Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan. Natural gas also is sold into the Western Australian domestic gas market.
Some customers commission Chevron Australia to transport LNG by sea using sophisticated LNG tankers. Other customers transport the LNG themselves. Natural gas is supplied to the Western Australian domestic market through underwater and above-ground pipelines.
The Gas Supply and Trading team also provides ongoing customer support and liaison activities.
The price of natural gas is set by market forces, based on supply and demand for the commodity in the marketplace.
Chevron is the largest holder of untapped natural gas resources in Australia.
For 30 years Chevron has been a joint venture participant producing natural gas for domestic use with partners in the nation’s biggest operational LNG project to date, the North West Shelf Project. For 25 years, the NWSV has been exporting LNG to international customers in the Asia-Pacific region.
We are now developing the Gorgon Project, an LNG and domestic gas development on Barrow Island, located about 60 kilometres off the northwest coast of Western Australia.
We also are developing our majority-owned and operated Wheatstone Project
as an LNG and domestic gas operation near Onslow on the mainland of Western Australia.
We also run a program to explore offshore opportunities and operate Australia’s largest onshore oil operation at Barrow Island in Australia's north-west region.
