Barrow Island – the location of the Gorgon Project – is a Class A Nature Reserve. It has also been home to Australia’s largest operating onshore oil field for the past 45 years.
First implemented by operators of the oilfield in the 1960s and continuously improved, Quarantine Management has effectively protected the conservation values of Barrow Island. We’re proud of that achievement.
Drawing from that success, we have implemented an equally successful program for the Gorgon Project – a program acknowledged by the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority as “likely to be world’s best practice”. It’s also the world's largest non-government quarantine initiative.
The program incorporates all activities associated with the movement of goods, materials, equipment and personnel to the island.
Everyone involved with the Gorgon Project is expected to help protect Barrow Island’s environment. The ongoing commitment of all personnel allows our quarantine requirements to be consistently met and maintained.
As part of our commitment to improving understanding of quarantine requirements for Barrow Island in the wider community, we have developed a number of awareness modules.
These modules – based on the actual training requirements for our own team members – provide a good overview of the lengths that we expect our suppliers, our contractors and ourselves to go to in order to protect Barrow Island’s biodiversity.
The first – Quarantine for Contractors and Suppliers – describes quarantine requirements throughout our supply chain and help create an awareness of the role individuals must play.
