Planning for Tomorrow – in Partnership

Anchored within the project are our partnerships with governments, businesses and communities.

Working together, we’re helping to maximise the benefits and minimise the pressures on local communities associated with Gorgon.

Because of our location on Barrow Island, social impacts on the Pilbara will be minor. But there is a real opportunity to benefit regional communities and we’ve already developed a Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP).

Contributing to Communities Where We Work

In developing the SIMP, we met with local government representatives, business leaders and people living in the area and then established Community Reference Groups (CRGs) in Karratha and Onslow to gain valuable input into ways we can minimise the effects and the local community can benefit from the development of Gorgon natural gas on Barrow Island.

Our SIMP focuses on Onslow, Karratha and Dampier, with areas for particular attention including:

  • Impact of Fly-In-Fly-Out operations
  • Employment and training opportunities
  • Regional business development
  • Indigenous participation
  • Community development

The SIMP will guide our project and contractors in implementing appropriate measures in these five key areas.

And as the progress of this iconic project gathers pace, strategies will be updated to help local communities prosper.
