Chevron Receives National Environment Award
PERTH, Western Australia, 21 May 2010 – Chevron Australia Pty Ltd has been recognised for its environmental custodianship and leadership receiving the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association’s (APPEA) 2009 Environment Award.
Chevron Australia’s Managing Director, Roy Krzywosinski, was presented with the award by the Federal Minister for Resources, Energy and Tourism, the Honourable Martin Ferguson, MP, at the opening session of the annual APPEA Conference and Exhibition being held in Brisbane this week.
The award recognised the company’s performance and innovative approach to ecological monitoring of Flatback Turtles on Barrow Island, which included more than 200 volunteer “Citizen Scientists” gathering empirical data on nesting turtles, tagging just over 3000 individuals over four years of studies.
Chevron Australia Managing Director, Roy Krzywosinski, said, “The Barrow Island Flatback Turtle study program is the largest of its kind in the world for this species, helping to deliver internationally recognised scientific knowledge and enhanced understanding of the industry’s ability to co-exist with nature conservation.”
The APPEA Environment Awards recognise excellence and innovation in environmental management and demonstrate how the industry is continuously raising the bar in environmental performance, sharing best practice and providing inspiration to the entire industry.
The program is funded by the Gorgon Joint Venture Participants – Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, Osaka Gas, Tokyo Gas and Chubu Electric Power.
