Our Let’s Read program in Exmouth is specifically designed to encourage parents to read aloud to their children and access a range of literature at their local library.

In 2007, Chevron Australia supported research by the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research which found that 50 percent of pre-primary aged children in Exmouth were developmentally vulnerable in the area of language and cognitive skills.

Research also has found that early childhood exposure to reading and books is recognised as critical to a child’s development, affecting self esteem, school performance and opportunities for success.

Let’s Read has been introduced in partnership with the Shire of Exmouth and independent non-profit organisation The Smith Family to encourage parents to read with children.

The funding provides for an early literacy specialist in Exmouth along with appropriate resources for parents.
