We are supporting capacity-building projects for the Thalanyji people and Bindi Bindi communities of Onslow, by linking the groups with skilled volunteers through Indigenous Community Volunteers.
A range of skills have been identified by the communities as important to their future success. These skills were then prioritised based on order of importance and urgency of need, with volunteers then identified to work with the communities on short term assignments to transfer those skills.
Through Chevron's and Indigenous Community Voulnteers' support, the Thalanyji people have established a cultural awareness training business.
In 2009, the group will develop its strategic plan, set up administration systems and mentor a new administration officer with the support of volunteers. Future projects are planned to teach submission writing skills and to continue the Thalanyji’s work to record and document its language, culture and stories.
The Bindi Bindi community plans to rebuild its community garden, which was previously destroyed by a cyclone, so they can grow fresh fruit and vegetables.
Indigenous Community Volunteers is a not-for-profit organisation that links indigenous communities with volunteers who are willing to share their skills in all kinds of areas, from business planning to horticulture or marketing.
